Protected Trees

A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is made by a local planning authority (usually the local council) to protect specific trees that make an impact on their local surroundings and are classed as important trees in the area. This prohibits deliberate damage and destruction to these protected trees.

A Conservation Area (CA) is an area of special architectural or historic interest. Trees which sit in these areas are considered worthy of preservation or enhancement.

Trees covered by a TPO/ CA cannot be pruned or felled without permission from the local council’s planning department.

How do you check if a tree has a TPO?

You should be able to check on the website of your local council to see which trees are protected. The trees are usually marked out on maps. If this information isn’t available on line, the council can be contacted by email who should be able to provide all relevant information.

How do you apply to carry out work on a TPO tree?

J Mountford Tree Services Ltd will check if a tree is covered by a TPO/ CA once our quote has been accepted. We will apply to the local authority for permission to carry out the work. This usually involves completing an application form with photos, maps and justifications for the proposed work. It usually takes up to 6-8 weeks from receiving he application to hear back.
